Latest news from the #WorldCupofPools
Round up of the tournament so far...
The #WorldCupofPools is a search for the UK’s favourite swimming pool. The competition is a straight knockout between 16 of the country’s most high-profile pools in a Twitter poll.
The competition kicked off with a battle between two London lidos – Hampton Pool and Brockwell Park. The game went to the wire with Hampton Pool coming out on top. This game set the early pace for the competition and demonstrated what is possible when highly competitive staff and customers passionately support their favourite pools. Fantastic creativity was shown by Hampton Pool by drumming up support with a series of engaging tweets and videos.
The final game of the first round was also a classic. The only Northern Irish representative, the 50m Bangor Aurora taking on the might of K2 Crawley, another impressive 50m pool. The lead changed hands throughout the three-day match, but it was Bangor Aurora who came out on top.
The Quarter Finals lived up to the hype with the iconic GLL’s London Aquatics Centre narrowly defeating Places for People’s Tooting Bec Lido. Tooting Bec Lido enjoyed great community support, but it was not enough to beat the host pool of the London 2012 Olympic Games. London Aquatics Centre were joined in the Semi Finals by Hampton Pool (victors over Sportspark, Norwich) and London Fields Lido (who beat Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth).
The best match was saved until last with Bangor Aurora taking on the newly refurbished and re-opened Charlton Lido. This game was the highest scoring of any game of the #WorldCupofPools so far, registering over 1,800 votes. Bangor Aurora scraped through the epic encounter to claim the final Semi Final spot by one percentage point.
All eyes are now on the Semi Finals, which kicks off Tuesday 26 June 2018 with an all GLL/Better match between London Aquatics Centre and London Fields Lido. Get ready to vote…
